The group currently operates Wanda Jin Residences The Ease Sierra Bangkok in the Huai Khwang-Ratchadapisek area and Wanda Vista Resort Khum Wang Nuea Chiang Mai in San Kamphaeng. As this Thailand Hotel News report examines, the proposed expansion could give Wanda a broader footprint across Thailand’s business, leisure and resort markets while strengthening its presence in one of Southeast Asia’s most competitive hospitality destinations.
Saphan Kwai and Patong Plans Emerge
Industry speculation indicates Wanda is negotiating to acquire an existing hotel located at Pradiphat road around Saphan Kwai, with plans to acquire, renovate and reposition the property under its portfolio. The location could provide Wanda with another strategic Bangkok address in an increasingly active district with convenient transport connections.
The proposed Patong development would take a different direction. Market information suggests Wanda is considering an entirely new-build hotel in Phuket’s best-known tourism district, with completion potentially targeted for early 2029. No final opening date, brand, room count or investment value has been officially announced, and the projects remain subject to negotiations and development decisions.
If both proceed, Wanda would increase its Thailand portfolio from two properties to four, establishing operations in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.
Global Portfolio Passes 300 Hotels
The Thailand plans emerge as Wanda Hotels & Resorts reaches an important international milestone. Established in 2007, the group now operates more than 300 hotels containing over 52,000 rooms and reports a development pipeline exceeding 500 additional properties across more than 400 destinations.
Its portfolio spans luxury, upscale and midscale hospitality, while its overseas strategy increasingly relies on an asset-light management model.
During the first half of 2026, Wanda signed a management agreement in Zimbabwe, marking its entry into Africa. The company has also expanded in Cambodia and Laos, adding projects in Sihanoukville, Phnom Penh and Luang Prabang. Its international presence already includes Istanbul, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Vientiane.
Culture, Resorts and Digital Growth
In China, Wanda continues developing integrated tourism concepts extending beyond conventional accommodation. Its winter tourism projects combine skiing with wellness, hot springs and family-oriented experiences, while developments in Guizhou and Yunnan incorporate regional culture, heritage, education, retail and entertainment.
The company’s loyalty programme had also grown beyond 25 million members by August. Following its move into the Tongcheng Travel ecosystem in October 2025, Wanda has been strengthening distribution and digital capabilities alongside its physical hotel expansion.
Thailand could now become increasingly important to that international strategy. Bangkok offers Wanda access to corporate, long-stay and urban leisure demand, while Chiang Mai provides a culturally driven resort market and Phuket would introduce the group to one of Asia’s most internationally recognized beach destinations. Should the Saphan Kwai acquisition and Patong development move forward, Wanda’s Thai expansion would underline its ambition to transform its 300-hotel milestone into a much larger global growth story.
