For hotels attempting to navigate the quieter months before the high season, that timetable means the promised stimulus will offer little immediate assistance.

One Million Entitlements Planned Under Expanded Scheme
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports and Ministry of Finance have jointly backed the proposal to increase the number of Thai Tiew Thai Plus entitlements to 1 million in a single registration round.
The proposed THB3.5 billion allocation is double the THB1.75 billion previously estimated for 500,000 entitlements. Funding is expected to come through borrowing under an emergency decree, although the proposal must first receive formal Cabinet approval.
Under the proposed structure, each eligible person will be permitted to claim as many as five entitlements.
For every entitlement, the government would subsidize 50% of accommodation expenses, with the state contribution capped at THB3,000. Participants would additionally receive a digital food and travel voucher worth up to THB500.
For hotels, particularly independent properties and smaller provincial operators, the accommodation subsidy could make domestic trips considerably more attractive to price-conscious Thai travelers.
All 77 Provinces Included
Unlike some previous tourism stimulus initiatives that placed additional emphasis on secondary destinations, Thai Tiew Thai Plus 2026 is expected to operate across all 77 provinces without differentiating between major tourism centers and secondary cities.
The program is also designed to distribute spending beyond hotels. Participating businesses are expected to include restaurants, tourist attractions, One Tambon One Product retailers, spas and wellness massage businesses, one-day tour operators, car rental providers, public transportation operators and boat rental services.
That wider structure could help create a multiplier effect. A subsidized hotel stay does not simply generate room revenue; travelers typically spend money on meals, transportation, attractions, shopping and other services at their destination.
The government’s stated objective is therefore broader than filling hotel rooms. It wants tourism expenditure to circulate through local communities and grassroots businesses while providing economic relief to operators affected by recent economic and energy-related pressures.
Registration October 1, But Travel Waits Until December
Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Pancharoenworakul said the back-end technology supporting the program through Krungthai Bank’s Paotang application was fully prepared. What remains is the finalization of the program’s criteria and conditions.
The proposal is expected to be submitted to the Cabinet for formal approval during September 2026.
Assuming approval proceeds as planned, public registration is scheduled to open through the Paotang app on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Applicants will be required to complete identity verification, and each participant will be eligible for up to five entitlements.
The important date for Thailand’s hotel industry, however, is December.
That is when participants can utilize the benefits!
And therein lies the frustration.
Hotels Still Have to Get Through the Coming Months
December is already part of Thailand’s traditional high season, particularly for destinations benefiting from cooler weather, year-end holidays and festive travel.
The timing consequently raises an obvious question: would Thailand’s hotel industry have received greater incremental benefit if the stimulus had been deployed during a weaker travel period?
Hotels requiring immediate assistance cannot use December bookings to pay today’s operating expenses. Payroll, utilities, maintenance, rent, financing costs and supplier bills continue regardless of whether government-supported guests arrive several months from now.
The program could unquestionably strengthen year-end domestic tourism demand, but accommodation businesses facing cash-flow pressures must still make their own way through September, October and November.
For some operators, particularly those heavily dependent on domestic guests and without the international demand enjoyed by Thailand’s major resort destinations, three months can be a very long time.
December Could Produce a Domestic Tourism Rush
Once activated, however, the scale of Thai Tiew Thai Plus could produce a noticeable burst of domestic travel.
One million entitlements, combined with the ability of an individual to register for up to five, could encourage longer trips, multiple hotel stays or visits to several destinations. The 50% room subsidy, capped at THB3,000 per entitlement, may also encourage travelers to consider hotels or room categories that would normally sit above their preferred budget.
The additional digital voucher could further stimulate expenditure after guests arrive at their destination.
Hotels would therefore be wise to prepare their distribution strategies, room inventory, pricing and promotional packages ahead of registration rather than waiting until December. Properties that clearly communicate their participation and create attractive packages around the subsidy could potentially capture a larger share of stimulated demand.
At the same time, operators should be cautious about unnecessarily discounting rooms during a period when organic high-season demand may already support stronger rates.
Nan and Northern Thailand Also Targeted for Recovery
The government is additionally looking at tourism stimulation in Nan following flooding that affected the northern province.
Surasak said the government wanted tourism activities introduced after recovery work was completed, particularly because the end of the rainy season leads into winter, traditionally one of Nan’s strongest periods for visitors.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is preparing promotional activity intended to stimulate tourism in Nan and the wider northern region.
That initiative could complement Thai Tiew Thai Plus if travelers use their subsidized entitlements for northern destinations during December’s cooler weather.
A Welcome Stimulus — But Hotels Have to Survive Until It Arrives
Doubling Thai Tiew Thai Plus to 1 million entitlements represents a potentially significant injection of domestic tourism expenditure, and the inclusion of hotels, restaurants, attractions, transportation providers and community businesses should spread its economic impact considerably. Yet the December implementation date means Thailand’s accommodation industry cannot regard the program as an immediate rescue package. Operators must first negotiate several more months of operating costs and uncertain demand before subsidized travelers begin checking in. When December finally arrives, the scheme could provide a welcome high-season boost — although many hoteliers may reasonably wonder why such assistance could not have arrived when rooms were harder to fill. The other interesting thing is whether the scheme will still be in place should the current government not remain in power by then! (This is Amazing Thailand! Anything is possible!)
