The findings come as travelers increasingly explore destinations beyond traditional tourism hotspots, creating fresh opportunities for hotels across the region. According to this Thailand Hotel News report, Chiang Mai’s performance reflects a broader shift toward affordable regional holidays, shorter international journeys, and culturally enriching experiences. The figures also suggest that Thailand’s northern hospitality sector could benefit from changing travel preferences throughout the autumn season.

Chiang Mai Outperforms Major Asian Destinations

Trip.com Group’s latest booking data identifies Chiang Mai as the fastest-growing destination among the highlighted Asia-Pacific cities, recording an 84.3 percent increase compared with the previous year.

Indonesia’s Surabaya followed with 63.1 percent growth, while South Korea’s Busan registered 62.7 percent. Manila recorded a 55.1 percent increase, followed by Jakarta at 38.1 percent.

Travelers from mainland China contributed significantly to bookings across these destinations, demonstrating the continuing importance of Chinese outbound tourism to regional hospitality markets.

For Chiang Mai, this momentum could strengthen demand for accommodation ranging from boutique properties and luxury resorts to budget-friendly hotels catering to independent travelers.

Affordable Regional Travel Drives Demand

The report identifies affordability and convenient short-haul journeys as important influences behind the growing popularity of emerging destinations.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on established tourism centers, travelers are increasingly considering alternative cities offering distinctive experiences and competitive accommodation options.

Chiang Mai is particularly well positioned within this trend, combining historic temples, traditional markets, mountain landscapes, and an established hospitality industry.

South Korea and Japan Attract Autumn Travelers

South Korea also demonstrated substantial growth, with Busan bookings increasing 62.7 percent and Jeju City recording a 31.4 percent rise. Seoul maintained strong momentum, registering growth of 37.1 percent.

Meanwhile, Japan dominated Trip.Best’s 2026 Global Top 50 Autumn Foliage Attractions, claiming 11 of the top 12 positions.

Kyoto’s Arashiyama secured first place, followed by Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Tōfuku-ji Temple. Tokyo’s Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and Osaka Castle Park completed the leading five attractions.

Younger Travelers Reshape Booking Patterns

Generation Z recorded the strongest growth in flight bookings, achieving double-digit year-on-year increases. Baby Boomers and Generation X also registered double-digit growth.

Millennials nevertheless remained the largest traveler category, representing nearly half of hotel and flight reservations.

Travelers are also embracing longer itineraries. Average hotel stays in mainland China exceeded two nights slightly, while 62.7 percent of bookings involved visits to at least two cities.

Digital Inspiration Creates New Opportunities

Trip.com’s Trip. Moments platform recorded a 203 percent annual increase in autumn-related posts during September, reaching 2,497.

Comments surged 616 percent year-on-year to 12,457, demonstrating growing engagement with seasonal travel content.

The company is also introducing its AI-powered Trip Discovery Agent to simplify destination research and comparisons.

Promising Outlook for Chiang Mai Hotels

Chiang Mai’s exceptional booking growth underscores its expanding appeal within Asia-Pacific tourism. Although stronger reservations do not automatically guarantee higher profitability, the figures present encouraging opportunities for local hotels, tourism operators, and hospitality investors seeking to capture changing international travel demand.

As regional competition intensifies, Chiang Mai’s ability to combine cultural authenticity, attractive accommodation, and memorable visitor experiences could prove essential to sustaining this momentum.
