The trend has become increasingly noticeable in Bangkok, where young foreign men and women are using hotels, condominiums and other accommodation as temporary bases from which to meet paying clients and produce pornographic content.
Many Spanish, French, Brazilian, Russian, American, Australian, British, Chinese, Taiwanese, Malaysian and Singaporean Chinese young men are coming to Thailand and selling sexual services, particularly to gay clients from other countries as well as local Thais.
An initial arrest of Nigerian and South Korean gay prostitutes who were also involved in gay-porn production was just the tip of an iceberg, with further investigations revealing that these activities widespread across Bangkok and that certain specific 3 and 4-star hotels are actually becoming hubs for these gen Z foreign prostitutes and gay porn actors.
There are now numerous apps, websites, messaging groups and other digital platforms through which these young male sex providers advertise themselves.
On some platforms, prospective clients can see when an individual will be arriving in Bangkok, how long he will be staying, the sexual services being offered and the rates being charged. In certain cases, clients are even required to make deposits or advance payments before an appointment is confirmed.
The digitalization of the sex business has made the entire process increasingly organized. A young foreigner can announce an upcoming trip to Bangkok before leaving his home country and potentially have a number of paying clients already arranged by the time he arrives in Thailand.
Certain Bangkok Hotels Becoming Regular Bases
Those coming to Thailand for longer stays, often under the guise of being digital nomads or extended-stay tourists, will typically rent condominiums.
Those making shorter visits, however, frequently use a number of familiar three- and four-star hotels in Bangkok.
Several properties in the Sathorn, Silom and Si Phraya Road areas are regularly being used, while other popular locations include hotels around Sukhumvit Soi 2, Sukhumvit Soi 11, Sukhumvit Soi 15, Sukhumvit Soi 16, Sukhumvit Soi 18, Sukhumvit Soi 20 and Sukhumvit Soi 22.
There also appear to be distinct accommodation patterns among some of the Asian male sex providers coming to Bangkok.
Many of the young Chinese and Taiwanese males coming to Bangkok for prostitution use about five hotels around the Ratchada area.
Meanwhile, some of the Singaporean and Malaysian males involved in such activities prefer certain hotels around Lat Phrao, Srinakarin, Udom Suk and Bang Na.
For these visitors, hotels are not merely places to sleep during their Bangkok trips. The rooms effectively become temporary workplaces where paying clients can be received throughout their stay.
Hotels Are Aware of What Is Going On
What is particularly interesting is that many of the hotels being repeatedly used appear to be aware of the activities taking place but simply close one eye.
When the same guests repeatedly return to Bangkok and have numerous different visitors coming to their rooms during their stays, it becomes increasingly difficult for hotel employees not to know what is happening.
Some of these repeat guests are even given special room discounts because they return to the same properties trip after trip.
In certain cases, hotels appear to have gone beyond simply ignoring what is happening and have adapted aspects of their operations to accommodate these sex providers.
This can include rapidly changing bedsheets after one client has left so that the room is ready for the next paying client.
There are even instances in which hotel staff or concierge personnel help accompany paying clients to the guest’s room.
The result is an extraordinary situation in which ordinary Bangkok hotels can effectively become temporary bases for foreign sex providers while normal hotel operations continue around them.
Young Foreign Women Are Doing the Same
The phenomenon is not restricted to young foreign men. There are also many young Chinese, Spanish, Russian and South American women coming to Bangkok to engage in prostitution and sell sexual services or engage in porn production. It was reported that the same is also happening in Phuket.
Young women from Ukraine, Russia, China, Taiwan, and various South American countries can also be found operating in Bangkok.
Many of these women use hotels in the Sathorn and Sukhumvit areas as their temporary bases, receiving clients during the period they are staying in the city.
Again, digital platforms have made the entire process considerably easier.
Rather than having to work from a conventional bar, massage establishment, nightclub or other entertainment venue, these young women can advertise online, communicate privately with prospective clients and arrange for them to come directly to their hotel rooms.
Bangkok and Bangkok Hotels Also Becoming a Location for Porn Collaborations
Another increasingly noticeable development involves foreign Gen Z travelers coming to Bangkok to produce pornographic content.
Many of the young male and female travelers involved in prostitution also participate in sex-video collaborations with other adult performers and porn stars while in Thailand.
In some cases, these collaborations are announced in advance on their OnlyFans accounts and other online platforms.
Followers are told that particular performers will be visiting Bangkok and collaborating with another creator during their stay.
As a result, Bangkok is increasingly being used not only as a destination for selling sexual services but also as a location for producing adult videos that are subsequently monetized and distributed through international digital platforms.
A foreign adult-content creator can fly into Bangkok, stay at a relatively inexpensive hotel, meet several paying clients, collaborate with other adult performers, produce new content and then leave Thailand after only a short stay.
A Different Side of the Gen Z Tourism Boom
It is perhaps little wonder that there are reports of Bangkok becoming an increasingly popular destination among Gen Z travelers.
While the relatively low cost of street food, shopping, transportation, hotels and entertainment remains attractive to younger foreign visitors, there is another economic dimension developing alongside conventional tourism.
Some young travelers are able to make considerable amounts of money while in Thailand by moonlighting through the latest digital apps and online platforms.
For those involved in prostitution or adult-content production, a trip to Bangkok can therefore become both a holiday and a money-making exercise.
They can enjoy Thailand’s relatively inexpensive lifestyle while simultaneously earning money from local Thais, other foreign tourists, online subscribers and paying clients.
The technology enabling this activity also means that much of it remains largely invisible to ordinary tourists.
Appointments can be advertised online, arranged through private messaging apps and paid for digitally. The actual sexual encounter then takes place behind the closed door of what outwardly appears to be an ordinary Bangkok hotel room.
Pornographic collaborations can similarly be organized privately and the finished content uploaded to platforms serving audiences thousands of kilometers away.
Hotels Quietly Benefiting from the Business
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this emerging trend is the role being played by certain hotels.
Rather than being completely unaware of what is happening inside their properties, some hotels appear to know exactly what certain repeat foreign guests are doing.
These Gen Z guests continue returning. They book rooms repeatedly, generate revenue for the hotels and, in some cases, bring a steady succession of paying clients through hotel entrances.
Some properties are apparently prepared to provide repeat-guest discounts, while hotel operations can even accommodate the rapid turnover of clients through housekeeping and other services.
The changing of bedsheets immediately after one client leaves, preparing the room for the next client, and concierge staff assisting visitors going to rooms illustrate just how far this strange new tourism ecosystem can extend.
It was also said that certain hotels in the Sukhumvit area that are owned by Thai Punjabi tailors or textile dealers or manufacturers are not only condoning such activities but their staff at their tailor shops along Sukhumvit road would also provide tips and access to apps to tourists about these Gen Z foreign prostitutes so that other potential clients can contact them!
Thailand’s tourism industry has always attracted an extraordinarily diverse range of international visitors. But the combination of Gen Z travel, cheap accommodation, smartphones, digital payments, sex-work platforms and subscription-based pornography has created something very different. Hopefully the local authorities and officials will be looking deeper into this.
For a growing number of young foreigners, Bangkok is apparently no longer simply somewhere to visit. It is also somewhere to do business!
Amazing Thailand indeed!
