Thailand Hotel News: Thailand’s hotel industry is facing a challenging start to 2026, with widespread reports of lower-than-expected bookings during the current Chinese New Year holidays. Operators across key destinations, from bustling Bangkok to southern hubs like Hat Yai, are voicing concerns over reduced tourist inflows, attributing the dip to economic pressures in China, lingering effects of natural disasters, and shifting travel preferences.

This Thailand Hotel News report delves into the latest concerns form hotel operators across the country highlighting a noticeable decline in reservations compared to previous years.

While TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) as usual, projected robust growth for 2026, aiming for 36.7 million foreign visitors overall, the Lunar New Year period—marking the Year of the Horse on January 29—has underperformed, with some areas seeing occupancy rates plummet.

Hotel bookings and guest arrivals for the 10-day Chinese New Year festival, from February 13–22, 2026, to date seems pessimistic.

Both the TAT and the THA (Thailadn Hotel Association) has been spewing numbers that claim tourism and hotel businesses are improving, many hotel operators and owners are saying otherwise.

Regional Impacts and Statistics

In southern Thailand, Hat Yai has been particularly hard-hit. Hotel bookings slumped to just 30-40% ahead and during the festivities, down from pre-flood projections of 70-80%.

Visitor numbers were estimated at only 25,000, far below the typical 50,000-60,000 during peak seasons.

The Hat Yai Songkhla Hotel Association noted that despite promotional events at four venues, advance reservations failed to recover, with Chinese tourists notably absent due to recent floods and visa scrutiny.

Bangkok, a traditional hotspot, also saw occupancy drop to 71.5% amid a 41% decline in Chinese arrivals

In 2025, nationwide, foreign tourist arrivals in 2025 fell 7.2% to 32.97 million, with Chinese visitors totaling just around 5.5 million—a 30% year-on-year drop and well short of TAT’s targets

This trend appears to have carried into 2026’s CNY, exacerbating pricing pressures in a market flooded with 5,100 new rooms.

Underlying Causes

Experts point to multiple factors. China’s economic slowdown has curbed outbound travel, while geopolitical tensions and a strong Thai baht have deterred budget-conscious visitors.

Furthermore, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia are now becoming formidable competitors to Thailand with cheaper prices, attractive promotions and newer attractions.

Although Thailand remains a top destination for its warm weather and visa-free policies, competition from numerous other competitors have drawn Chinese, Malaysian, Singaporean and Taiwanese tourists elsewhere. Additionally, viral incidents of racial abuse in Phuket have tarnished perceptions, further impacting bookings along with crimes involving Chinese and cases of tourists being scammed.

Industry Outlook and Responses

Hoteliers are calling for government intervention, including enhanced marketing campaigns and infrastructure improvements. Meanwhile the TAT remains optimistic, forecasting a rebound with events like cultural festivals in Bangkok.

However, the sector braces for a “highly challenging” year, with anticipation that mid-range hotels will face the brunt of the competition. As Thailand navigates these headwinds, adapting to premium and regional travelers may be key to recovery.
